Latinos for a New America

Latinos for a New AmericaLatinos for a New America is a political action endeavor of La Raza Unida 21. Its mission is to develop a movement of Latino independent voters and endorse candidates who will work toward fulfilling La Raza Unida 21′s goals, including reform of the American political process.

For more than 40 years, since the First Chicano Rights Movement, neither of the two major political parties have served the interests of Latinos. Back then, we had little representation. Today, however, even with more than 5,000 Latino elected officials in office, nothing has changed. The ones we sent to make changes have forgotten whence they came, became corrupted or co-opted. Today, we have more Latinos who are living in poverty, under-educated and underemployed per capita than before.

Again, in 2010, Latino issues were ignored when a Democratic president along with a Democratic-controlled of the House of Representatives and the Senate failed on many fronts to deliver what we consider Latino core goals:

  • Education reform
  • Civil and human rights protection
  • Universal health care
  • Comprehensive Immigration Reform
  • Jobs and living wages
  • Curtailment of corporate takeover of the political process

At the same time the Republican Party has shut its doors on Latinos for decades as well. They too failed in 2010-2011 congressional sessions to approve of the DREAM Act, and universal health care. They have allowed states to usurp federal authority by letting them to enact immigration laws such as the ones in Alabama and Arizona; all leading to a reign of terror against Latinos.

It is our firm belief both major parties have compromised themselves to corporate masters that they are unable to deliver the kind of governance required in the 21st century. They have become two wings of one elite party that no longer represents living, breathing Americans.

For these and many other reasons outlined at La Raza Unida 21′s mission statement, we advocate for Latino voters to leave both major political parties and declare themselves independent voters.

Join Latinos for a New America — an organization working with others to form an influential bloc of independent and progressive voters who will become the swing vote in deciding who will govern us.

Latinos for a New America will support candidates who can bring our core goals to reality. We understand the reality of trying to move the current political-corporate-dominant structure. However, we seek to diminish its influence over time and create a fundamental transformation of the democratic process.

Latinos for a New America will work with other organizations who support new models of nonpartisan independent governance and striving for the broadest forms of bottom-up participation.

Nothing precludes Latinos for a New America from registering as a political party or working with other organizations and fielding its own independent candidates in the future. Our predecessors of the First La Raza Unida Party ultimately realized they did not have the critical mass of voters. But, today, in some areas, Latinos constitute the majority. We will win in those regions by supporting or opposing candidates and issues, from school boards to the state and national offices.

Latinos for a New America operates as a nonprofit 527 political organization (pending IRS approval). Donations are not tax deductible. Latinos for a New America is a volunteer organization of concerned Americans.
